Building a competitive local aerospace supply chain
The UK's aerospace and defence primes need choice. They need a supply base that is broad, competitive and credible — one that can quote, deliver and pass audit without drama. Too often that base is narrower than it should be, because the barrier to entry for a capable small business is high: certification is expensive, the standards are dense, and the expertise to navigate them has historically been locked up in consultants charging day rates that a growing firm can't justify.
We think that's the wrong way round.
The problem with the status quo
A machine shop or specialist manufacturer that could be an excellent supplier often never makes it onto an approved vendor list. Not because the work isn't good enough, but because the operational and quality scaffolding around the work — AS9100, traceability, documented process control — feels out of reach. The cost of getting ready is treated as a fixed, front-loaded expense with an uncertain payoff.
The result is a thinner supply base than the sector deserves, and primes carrying more concentration risk than they'd like.
What "ready" actually means
Being ready for AS9100 isn't about a binder on a shelf. It's about a business that:
- Understands where its operations stand today, honestly and benchmarked
- Knows the handful of gaps that matter most, in priority order
- Has a plan it can actually work — in manageable steps, at its own pace
- Can show evidence that its processes run the way it says they do
None of that requires a six-figure transformation programme. It requires the right guidance, delivered efficiently, tailored to the specific business — and repeatable, so success doesn't reset every time.
Closing the gap
This is exactly the philosophy behind ProgressXL, the platform we're bringing to market: take the assessments, priorities and improvement disciplines we use with clients and put them into software a business can run itself. Score your operations, get a tailored improvement plan, work it at your own pace, and watch the number move as you close the gaps.
A stronger local supply base is good for the small businesses that break into it, and good for the primes that gain real choice. If you're a manufacturer weighing up aerospace and defence work — or a business that just has to keep delivering — that's the outcome we're building towards.
